A 1990s San Juan Capistrano residence, newly bought and structurally sound, with dated interiors ready to be rethought.
The staircase came first. A centerpiece of the home, it was completely demo’d and rebuilt with a design that reads modern without losing a sense of grace. The kitchen was next, gutted to the core and rebuilt around a set of vintage 1950s pantry doors, with soapstone counters and unlacquered brass fixtures that will age with the room.
New flooring runs throughout: limestone tile, herringbone wood, and hand-painted tile. The walls were layered in lime wash and fresh paint, then set against striking light fixtures and intricate wallpaper. The client’s love of bold color, pattern, and eclectic accents met a steadier hand of traditional detail, and the house landed somewhere personal and unforced.
