ARROYO
North Tustin, CA
Nestled in the hills of North Tustin, this architect-designed adobe-style home called for a thoughtful refresh of the family room to comfortably accommodate large gatherings while remaining true to the home’s distinctive character. The existing space no longer supported the needs of a growing family, and the redesign focused on improving both function and flow, balancing refined, comfortable furnishings with durability suited to everyday living.
The room’s defining elements of exposed wood beams, original brick, and the sculptural, rounded fireplace guided the design direction. Select areas of brick were carefully painted to introduce shape and visual balance, allowing the fireplace to read as an intentional focal point rather than a visual interruption. New custom furnishings were designed to soften the room’s strong architectural lines, including custom French mattress bench cushions that wrap the hearth to create generous seating for family gatherings and movie nights. Layered textiles and warm, neutral upholstery bring comfort and cohesion while maintaining a relaxed, lived-in quality.
A refinished heirloom coffee table anchors the seating arrangement, complemented by a handmade Italian ceiling fixture that introduces a refined counterpoint to the rustic structure. Custom oak storage benches with soft-close lids provide concealed storage for toys and blankets, ensuring the space remains practical for everyday use. The family room balances durability with warmth, creating an inviting environment where comfort and craftsmanship coexist while remaining grounded in the home’s original character.
